Republican and Democrat singles sound off: Yahoo! Personals 2004 election survey results

These are the findings from an August 2004 Yahoo! Personals online survey of more than 1,400 singles.

-- Opposing views? Not always. There are a few issues that Democrat singles and Republicans actually agree upon:

  • Nearly all of the Democrat singles (95 percent) and Republicans (97 percent) surveyed say they would never consider changing their political affiliation simply because they were dating someone from the opposite party.

  • Both Democrat singles and Republicans say it's important to know a person's political affiliation before going out with them (60 percent and 52 percent respectively), while the majority of Independents (60 percent) say that's not a deciding factor

-- Passion can outweigh opposing political views say nearly three-fourths of singles - both Republicans (67 percent) and Democrat singles (68 percent).

-- More than half say a little tension can be positive: 51 percent of singles are willing to date someone with completely opposite political views, while 49 percent say "no way."

-- Not registered to vote? Nearly one-third (31 percent) of singles say that their opinion of someone would change if they found out a date had not done their civic duty.

-- First date jitters? Just talk politics! Nearly three-fourths of singles (74 percent) are willing to talk about politics on a first date and 72 percent will tell who they voted for during that first encounter.

-- Members of both political parties are loyal to their candidates: While the majority of Democrats (80 percent) vote John Edwards the "best looking" candidate, the majority of Republicans (59 percent) say President George W. Bush is the most attractive.

-- Ideal dinner date? 42 percent say former President Bill Clinton, and 30 percent vote for President George W. Bush.

-- The majority of singles (45 percent) would most like to date John Edwards if he were single.

-- Here's the stance in a few of the "battleground" states:

Pennsylvania
Colorado
Iowa
