Single Mothers: Advice & Strategies

With so much to do in your life, it's tempting to put dating and developing a new relationship on the back burner. We're tapping into the experience of other single mothers and trusted advisors to help you heal, regain trust and love again. We're answering your questions here, too.

Dating Strategies

Sheila Ellison

Make dating about experimenting, not auditioning

Remember eighth-grade science lab, when you mixed a little of this with a little of that to come up with who knows what? Dating is like that -- one continuous experiment. You mix a little of your personality, needs, and goals with a little of his, and you get something that either deserves a write-up or a trip to the trash bin.

Dating Advice

Sheila Ellison answers:

"I think I've found someone who interests me. He lives about 100 miles from me. I have teenage daughters who would not relocate for anything. How do I handle this situation in case it appears? Also, he wants someone within 50 miles of his home. How do I handle this distance between our homes?"

Dating Advice

How do I know I can trust him?

"I have met a really wonderful guy who adores me both mentally and physically, however through a lot of bad experiences, I have a problem with trust when it comes to him and other potential women. Do you have any tips for building trust before I lose what could be the best thing ever?

Dating Advice

Can I get away from guilt?

"I would love to go out more often but find myself feeling guilty all the time because maybe I should be with my children. I am with them everyday. Also, I'm getting a lot of hostile remarks about dating from my ex. What should I do?

Dating Advice

Déjà vu all over again

"I have five children and seem to attract the same type of men (the abusive/possessive type). I dated people who I thought were friends, but turned out not to be. I'm looking for a friend first. Then we'll see what happens next. However, when I do meet someone, they always think I'm looking for a dad for my children. How do I change the type of man I attract?
